Referendum campaigning continues apace

Significant progress is being made with the distribution of referendum leaflets throughout Hammersmith.

We'd like to say a huge 'thank you' to everyone who is participating and giving up so much of their time for this campaign!

We can already see the effect it's having on the promise-breaking, anti-referendum MP we're targetting - Andrew Slaughter.

But there's still much more to do to help raise the profile of the event and to ensure everyone uses their opportunity to vote.

Slaughter's fury over referendum campaign

Local MP Andrew Slaughter has reacted angrily to the Hammersmith referendum campaign, flying off the handle at I Want a Referendum chairman Derek Scott during a BBC radio interview.

Clearly irritated that his promise-breaking plans are being highlighted to local voters so effectively, Slaughter cheekily accused Mr Scott of fronting a "dishonest" marketing exercise and of playing party politics.

Yet Mr Slaughter somehow managed to overlook his own blatant dishonesty, in claiming the Lisbon Treaty is 'significantly different' to the EU Constitution, on which he promised to support a referendum.

In response, Mr Scott - a Labour supporting former adviser to Tony Blair - pointed out that the I Want a Referendum campaign has support from across the political spectrum, and has Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs on its advisory board as well as Conservatives.

Hitting back at Mr Slaughter, Scott said: "You may get away with this twisting in the House of Commons but I think people out there actually realise what you are trying to do."

According to well-informed political blogger, Guido Fawkes, the debate became rather more heated than the BBC even dared to report. He claims that the presenter of the BBC programme, Mark Darcy, told Scott he had never seen anything like it in his career.

Referendum leafleting steps up a gear

Leafleting aimed at highlighting the local referendum stepped up a gear this morning, with events at three of Hammersmith's busy tube stations.

Thousands of the campaign's eye-catching leaflets were distributed outside White City, Ravenscourt Park and Barons Court stations between 7am and 9am.

Leafleting door-to-door throughout the constituency has also begun, with deliveries going ahead last night in the Ravenscourt Park and Hammersmith Broadway areas.

Brook Green / Addison, Askew and Shepherds Bush Green areas are the focus of activity this evening. Details below - please come along if you can!

Hammersmith activists launch local referendum

Derek Scott (Chairman of I Want A Referendum & a former adviser to Tony Blair), Shaun Bailey (Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Hammersmith), Greg Hands MP, Syed Kamall MEP, Charles Tannock MEP and activists from a range of pro-referendum organisations attended the launch of the Hammersmith EU Treaty Referendum this afternoon.

Commenting at the launch of the campaign, Derek Scott said:

"We're giving the people of Hammersmith a chance to have the vote that the Government is denying them. We want to remind MPs of their commitments - every political party promised a referendum at the last election, and MPs must be held to that."

Mary Ann Sieghart, who is based in Hammersmith and is a supporter of the campaign, said:

"This is an issue of trust. At the last election, MPs from all parties, including Andrew Slaughter, vowed to back a referendum on the EU Constitution. We simply want him to keep his promise."

"Instead of going back on election pledges, Andrew Slaughter should listen to what his constituents actually want."

Shaun Bailey, the Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Hammersmith, said:

"In the coming weeks, we will be campaigning with people from all parties to make the most of this opportunity. I want to urge as many people as possible in Hammersmith to vote in this referendum."

"We believe that this European Constitution would be bad for Britain and would lead to important decisions about crime, public services and immigration being taken in Brussels, not by us here in Britain. People should be allowed to have a say, before we give such important powers to the EU."

Stuart Coster, Director of the Democracy Movement and Hammersmith resident, said:

"Andrew Slaughter promised a referendum on the original EU Constitution; everyone seems to be saying that the Lisbon Treaty is essentially the same document, so it's clear he must honour his election promise. This referendum is a question of trust."

Referendum leaflets highlight local vote

The first major distribution of leaflets as part of the Hammersmith referendum campaign took place outside Barons Court tube station from 7am this morning, where a team of volunteers handed them to early-morning commuters.

The eye-catching flyers (pictured), featuring local MP Andrew Slaughter on the front, ask 'Why won't our MP listen to us?' and encourage Hammersmith residents to have their say.

Many more distributions are scheduled over the next few days - please hook up with local teams at the meeting points below and give them a hand if you can. Don't forget to check back here regularly as new events and details are being added all the time.

6 February, when the campaign team will be putting up the giant
I Want A Referendum ballot box in Lyric Square, Hammersmith between 4pm and 6pm.

EU treaty referendum to be held in Hammersmith

Activists of the I Want a Referendum campaign, the Democracy Movement and other pro-referendum groups have announced plans to hold a referendum in the Hammersmith constituency on the revived EU Constitution.

Hammersmith is a key marginal seat in Westminster elections, currently held by Labour backbencher Andrew Slaughter (majority: 5,520). See his stance and voting record on the Lisbon Treaty on ReferendumList.com

Local activists have chosen the seat to highlight Labour’s decision to go back on their 2005 General Election manifesto pledge to support a referendum on the EU Constitution, currently being revived as the 'Lisbon Treaty'.

During February, voters in Hammersmith will receive a pack containing an information leaflet with contributions from both sides of the debate, a ballot paper, and a freepost envelope. The ballot paper will ask two questions:

(a) whether there should be a national referendum on the EU Constitution - now known as the Lisbon Treaty

- and -

(b) whether the UK should actually adopt the Treaty.

Voting will be going on between 6 February and 25 February and the result of the referendum will be announced before the end of the month.

The vote in the constituency will be part of a first wave of referendums in constituencies across the UK. Together, the votes will form the biggest public consultation on the EU since 1975 and will increase the pressure on Gordon Brown to call the national referendum he promised the British people in 2005.

To carry out a professional poll, local activists have commissioned the Electoral Reform Services (ERS) - the world's leading independent ballot administrator and independent scrutineer. The results will be presented to Parliament and form a backdrop to the Government's attempt to ram the Treaty through Parliament without a referendum.
